Lengthwise-Axis Rotation. By rolling the bow between the thumb and fingers, it can be made to rotate around its own lengthwise axis so that the stick will alternately lean toward the bridge or toward the fingerboard. This motion of the fingers is only rarely used, but it can serve to help regulate the amount of hair that contacts the string. In actual playing, however, it is more practical to achieve this type of regulation by “wrist-motion” (lowering or raising the hand in the wrist joint).
